Pinnacle's turn-key optogenetics system offers a straightforward solution for a wide range of optogenetic experimental models. Our improved system seamlessly integrates optogenetic control with simultaneous biopotential, neurotransmitter and behavioral recordings to accommodate a number of experimental models and our improved optogenetic toolset allows more precise targeting of specific circuits and structures.

Hardware

Pinnacle's complete optogenetics system includes an optogenetic interface module, data conditioning and acquisition system, commutator, headstage, and all the necessary cables. The key component of the Pinnacle system is the Optogenetics Interface Module which provides precise timing, illumination control and integration with the electrophysiological and biosensor system. It features:

  •   Highly accurate clock (< 1 ppm precision)
  •   Three digital inputs, one digital output
  •   Two isolated inputs for external stimuli

Wireless

Pinnacle's wireless optogenetics systems feature:

  •   Greater than 100 mW/mm2 on most LED probes.
  •   Standardized Smart Bluetooth® telemetry.
  •   Minimum of 24 hour battery life.
  •   Stim Only, Stim + Biosensor, and Stim + EEG versions available.
  •   Compatible with group housed experiments.
  •   *Optical Stimulus for Wireless FSCV is also available.

Headstages

A number of headstage configurations are available for optogenetic experiments. Users can select headstages that solely contain optical stimulation or combine optogenetics with biopotential and neurotransmitter recordings. The entire system configuration can be modified simply by changing the type of headstage, enabling researchers to customize the system to their current experimental needs. Each headstage can be bought separately or in a kit that contains surgical tools and disposables for your first four animal surgeries.

LED probes

Pinnacle's optogenetics system employs powerful LEDs. Most wavelengths delivering 100 mW/mm2 and are coupled to a 200 um fiber optic cable protected by 50 um cladding. Use the table below to select the probe wavelength that corresponds with the opsin specified in your experiment.

Depth electrode

For researchers interested in deep brain recordings, cannula depth electrodes are available to measure neuronal activity in a localized area before, during and after optical stimulation. These specialized cannulas are ideal for EEG measurements that require a high level of recording precision and insight into subcortical neurological functions.

Cannulas

Sterotaxically placed guide cannulas allow for the insertion of LED fiber probes during surgery. Probe cannulas and prefabricated headmounts are affixed to the skull with dental acrylic, and the headstage acts as a connection port for up to two probes. Pinnacle offers a wide variety of prefabricated headmounts and connectors to support multiple experimentation requirements.
