產品特點

The elevated plus maze (EPM) was designed to measure anxiety in laboratory animals and as a general research tool in neurobiological anxiety research. The model is based on the test animal aversion to open spaces

All Animal Mazes manufactured by Ugo Basile are designed to give optimal results with any Video-Tracking software. This is achieved by:

  • high-contrast colors: grey, white, black or the NEW Ugo Basile light-blue
  • non-reflective surface: reflections are a common source of error in animal tracking. Let’s avoid them!

All materials were selected to be sturdy and easy to clean, to construct reliable and durable mazes. Surface texture was selected for best rodent comfort (reasonably rough, “warm” surface).

The mouse EPM, has four 5cm wide and 35cm long arms, two of which are open: the wall in the closed arms is 15cm high. In the rat model the four arems are 10cm wide and 50cm long, while the closed arms are 40cm tall. Height from the floor is 60cm for either model. The EPM is supported by 4 metal legs, which make the device very stable.

The closed arms can be quickly detached for easy cleaning and storage.

應用領域

The elevated plus-maze test is used as a rodent model of anxiety, and is representative of those tests that are based upon the study of spontaneous behaviour patterns. The model is based on the test animal's aversion to open spaces. In the EPM, this anxiety is expressed by the animal spending more time in the enclosed arms.

The elevated plus maze is a widely used behavioral assay for rodents and it has been validated to assess the anti-anxiety effects of pharmacological agents and steroid hormones, and to define brain regions and mechanisms underlying anxiety-related behavior.

Briefly, rats or mice are placed at the junction of the four arms of the maze, facing an open arm, and entries/duration in each arm are recorded by a video-tracking system and observer simultaneously for 5 min. Other ethological parameters (i.e., rears, head dips and stretched-attend postures) can also be observed.

An increase in open arm activity (duration and/or entries) reflects anti-anxiety behavior.
