顱內注射是一種局部給藥方法，許多藥物如果不是經由局部給藥，並無法充分地在腦部發揮作用。然而顱內注射在輸送有效濃度的生物相容體積時會有一定的難度，藥物甚至有可能無法停留在局部夠長的時間產生效用。
對於許多化合物而言，局部注射後再輸送到腦部是唯一可以產生穩定效果的方法。
ALZET幫浦已被用於數百項已發表的神經科學研究，包括將生長因子，siRNA，精神活性藥物等藥劑注入中樞神經系統。
